Turkmenistan strengthens international cooperation on the environmental track

Turkmenistan intends to intensify partnership on the environmental track and, based on the country’s priority positions voiced at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, is ready to take a number of new steps in the environmental component of international cooperation.

To promote the “Caspian Environmental Initiative” presented at the UN by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov as an international platform for professional interaction on environmental issues of the Caspian Sea, as a first step it is proposed to hold a round table in the second half of April with the participation of representatives of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office and other international organizations , working in Turkmenistan, together with the Caspian Sea Institute, the Academy of Sciences and departments of the country.

This was discussed at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on Friday, April 12. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov also made a proposal for Turkmenistan to join the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. The list of this convention includes over 33 thousand species of animals and plants, many of which are common in Turkmenistan, which accession to this treaty will improve the protection of rare and endangered species of fauna and flora.

In addition, Turkmenistan intends to join the Euro-Asian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums and establish cooperation with zoological parks of the member countries of this organization and exchange experience in improving the qualifications of specialized experts.

In order to preserve biodiversity in our country and in adjacent territories, protect migratory species of wild animals, and strengthen the international legal framework, a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of protection of the wildlife of the Ustyurt Plateau is being prepared for signing between the relevant ministries of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

In anticipation of the Youth Conference (COY-19), which will be held on the eve of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate

Change (COP-29), a Roadmap of Turkmenistan’s youth initiatives in the field of climate change for 2024 has been developed. This document is aimed at environmental protection and includes activities related to increasing environmental knowledge and scientific research.
