Belarusian scientists are creating a fermented milk product for space
The participation of Belarusian scientists in the space program will have practical significance on Earth.
At a press conference dedicated to Cosmonautics Day, which is celebrated annually on April 12, representatives of the republic’s scientific sphere presented details of ongoing and upcoming projects.
The scientific developments are based on the results of experiments conducted in orbit by the first Belarusian female cosmonaut Marina Vasilevskaya, the Belarusian Internet portal Tochka.by. reports. She completed her visit to the International Space Station (ISS) on April 6 and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
Among the projects being developed is the creation of a fermented milk product for space. During the flight, Vasilevskaya conducted a number of biotechnological experiments on storing samples of probiotic strains of lactic acid organisms and bifidobacteria under space flight conditions. For this purpose, a number of strains of lactic acid microorganisms and bifidobacteria were selected.
Astronauts will be able to consume fermented milk products produced in space during flights.
The strains have now been delivered to Belarus. Scientists will determine what happened to lactic acid and bifidobacteria in orbit.
Belarus also plans to install a Belarusian telescope on a Russian Earth sensing satellite, which is planned to be launched in 2028.
