April 8 marks the 32nd anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and Russia
April 8 marked 32 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Turkmenistan. During this period of cooperation, strong ties, based on the principles of equality, mutual respect and good neighborliness were formed between our countries, the publication of the Russian diplomatic mission in Ashgabat says on this occasion.
The special nature of the partnership is recorded in the 2017 Treaty and reaffirmed by the Declaration on Deepening the Strategic Partnership, signed in June 2022 by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov.
An active dialogue is maintained at the highest levels. To participate in the meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the CIS in May of this year, a visit of Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin is scheduled to Ashgabat, according to a press release.
The embassy also noted the constructive interaction between the two countries at key international and regional platforms, including the CIS, the Caspian Five, as well as the UN, OSCE and the CA5+Russia dialogue mechanism.
Over the past five years, Russia has been one of Turkmenistan's main trading partners with an annual trade turnover exceeding US$1.6 billion. Such large Russian corporations as PJSC Gazprom, PJSC Tatneft, PJSC Kamaz, Vozrozhdenie group of companies, etc. successfully operate in the country.
There is also significant potential in interregional cooperation. St. Petersburg, the Republic of Tatarstan and the Astrakhan region are especially active in this area. Much attention is paid to contacts in the humanitarian sphere. More than 40 thousand students from Turkmenistan study at Russian universities. Targeted quota enrollment of students through ministries and departments is also being successfully implemented.
“Russia attaches great importance to the development of friendly relations with Turkmenistan, which contribute to strengthening stability and security in Central Asia and the Caspian region,” the Russian Embassy said.
