Turkmenistan and the UN have identified the focus of cooperation on the eve of the Summit of the Future

The next meeting of the Steering Committee for the Implementation of the Framework Program for Cooperation in the Field of Sustainable Development between Turkmenistan and the United Nations for 2021-2025 and the National Working Group on the SDGs was held on Thursday, April 4, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

The event, chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Mahri Bashimova, was attended by employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance and Economy and representatives of more than 20 other departments of the country, the UN Permanent Coordinator in Turkmenistan, heads of UN units in Ashgabat.

Makhri Bashimova focused the participants' attention on the need to improve the mechanism of interaction between Turkmenistan's institutions and UN agencies in Ashgabat on the basis of medium- and long-term plans.

Dmitry Shlapachenko, the UN Permanent Coordinator in Turkmenistan, recalled that in September 2024 the world community expects a Summit of the Future, which, among other things, is designed to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. He expressed confidence that Turkmenistan and the United Nations, together defining priorities for work within the framework of the 2030 Agenda, will be able to better focus on the most vulnerable groups of the population, increase the effectiveness of cooperation on the SDGs, following the principle of "leaving no one behind."

During the meeting, the development of a new "roadmap" for the implementation of the Cooperation Framework Program for 2026-2030, a strategy for its financing, and a plan for monitoring and evaluating activities were discussed. An exchange of views took place on the interaction of legal and socio-economic orientation, according to the focus of five target groups:

• Green technologies in the context of food security and climate change; • digitalization and data management;
• development of the education system with an emphasis on school and vocational education;
• Strengthening health capacity;
• the development of human rights institutions, in particular, the formation of specialized areas in the structure of the office of the Commissioner for Human Rights - for the protection of the rights of the child, ensuring the rights of women, etc.
