Creation of competitive varieties of crops and hybrids using traditional methods and achievements of biotechnology and genetic engineering is one of the functions of NASEC.

In the grain-growing regions of Kazakhstan, wheat varieties bred on the basis of the Research and Production Center for Grain Farming named after A.I. Baraev are gaining popularity. Spring wheat varieties bred here in 2023 were used on 67% of the crop area in Akmola (2,874.6 thousand hectares), by 23% in North Kazakhstan region (586.1 thousand hectares), by 14% in Karaganda (109, 2 thousand hectares) and by 9% - in Kostanay regions (320.8 thousand hectares).

As noted by head of the Research and Production Center for Grain Farming named after A.I. Baraev Timur Savin, the republic recently patented a new variety of wheat, “Taymas,” which is resistant to drought, heat and disease. It will now be distributed as priority seed varieties.

Research Institute of Plant Protection and Quarantine named after. Zh. Zhiembaev, which is the only institution in the country specializing in the field of plant protection and quarantine, was proposed to create a new control system based on appropriate certification.
