Beijing aims to become a model of the digital economy


Beijing intends to become a model city on a global scale for the digital economy with a developed system of production, management and lifestyle.
This was stated by Mayor Yin Yun during the second session of the 16th Beijing Municipal People's Congress.
In recent years, the capital of China has become a pioneer in the field of key technologies and infrastructure. For example, last year Beijing built 30,000 5G base stations.
In 2023, the city's GDP reached 4.4 trillion yuan (61.16 million US dollars). This is 5.2% more than last year. The contribution of the digital economy to its GDP was 42.9%, compared with 41.6% in 2022.
According to the government's work report, GDP growth will be 5% this year.
In 2024, the city will continue to improve the basic AI technology, promote the application of its AI models in public administration, medicine, industry and the service sector.
Automatic driving will be used at airports, railway stations and in cleaning city roads. The city is also actively developing new digital infrastructure, such as a 10 gigawatt optical network and an Internet of vehicles.
Last week, 15 automatic patrol cars began guarding industrial parks, metro stations and shopping malls around the clock in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone. These were the first road tests of such cars in China.
