Plans for 2024 were outlined at the meeting of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO


The regular meeting of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO was held in the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the chairmanship of Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov on Saturday, January 20.
The meeting was attended by members of the Cabinet of Ministers, heads and representatives of relevant ministries and departments of the country.
Rashid Meredov summed up the results of the activities of the interdepartmental commission for UNESCO in 2023 and outlined the priorities for its further work.
It was noted that during 2023, 4 documents were signed between Turkmenistan and UNESCO, and measures were taken to preserve the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Turkmen people to increase its importance at the international level, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Special attention was paid to joint efforts to add Turkmenistan's national values to the UNESCO World Heritage Lists. In September last year, the transnational sites "The Great Silk Road: Zarafshan–Garagum Corridor", as well as "Turan Deserts of the Temperate Zone" and the national nomination "Ahal-Teke horse breeding Art and traditions of horse decoration" were included in the Representative List of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Due to the purposeful work to increase the country's representation in UNESCO structural units, Turkmenistan was elected a member of the Intergovernmental Committee on Physical Culture and Sport (CIGEPS) for 2023-2027.
At the same time, UNESCO chairs have been opened in two higher educational institutions of the country through the UNITWIN programs and the Network of Associated Schools, and six secondary schools of Turkmenistan have been included in the UNESCO network of Associated Schools. The Magtymguly Youth Organization of Turkmenistan has become an official member of the Global Youth Community.
Also last year, the collection of manuscripts of the Turkmen philosopher and poet Magtymguly Pyragy was included in the International List of "Memory of the World", and the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the birth of the classic of Turkmen and world literature joined the UNESCO list of memorable dates in 2024-2025.
During the meeting, the participants exchanged views on the issues on the agenda of the meeting and discussed preparations for the events scheduled to be held jointly with UNESCO in 2024.
The draft work plan of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO for 2024 was considered.
