A round table dedicated to the UN General Assembly resolution “Central Asia in the face of environmental challenges: strengthening regional solidarity for sustainable development and prosperity,” adopted on the initiative of Uzbekistan was held in Geneva.

The event was attended by representatives of the diplomatic missions of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, as well as structural units of the UN and international organizations in Geneva, Dunyo news agency reported.

During the round table it was noted that the resolution contains specific tasks to effectively counter climate and environmental threats in Central Asia, including through the development of sustainable agriculture, landscaping, rational use of water resources, energy efficiency, waste recycling, development of sustainable tourism, creating smart cities and sustainable transport.

Along with this, it was emphasized that special attention in the document is paid to the problems of the Aral Sea. It is noted that the negative humanitarian, environmental and socio-economic consequences represent a global problem. In this regard, the relevance and effective activities of the Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral Sea region, created under the auspices of the UN, were emphasized.

In turn, the participants welcomed the initiative of Uzbekistan to hold the International Climate Forum in Samarkand in 2024, which will contribute to finding solutions to global environmental threats.

UN diplomats and experts noted the timeliness and importance of the call for the introduction of innovative methods and new technologies in the fight against desertification and land degradation, as well as the initiative to create a Platform for Water Saving Technologies in Central Asia.
