How firefighters helped save a deer on a frozen lake using curling techniques
Every year, frozen lakes in the northern territories create problems for emergency services called to rescue people or animals on thin ice.
This time, the heroes were the innovating American firefighters who used the equipment of the Olympic sport.
Concerned residents of Prior Lake, Minnesota, USA, called the fire department after spotting a large deer stuck on Pike Lake. The animal could not stand on the slippery surface of the ice, and its legs fell into the cold water, from which it tried with all its might, but unsuccessfully, to get out.
Arriving firefighters devised a plan to use a curling technique to push the deer toward shore using a Y-shaped pole. But first they had to carefully get to the animal, crawling on all fours on treacherous ice.
The city of Prior Lake gratefully described the heroic incident in Instagram posts: "Firefighters donned protective gear and carefully crawled across the ice... They were able to push the deer to shore!"
