Chess player from Turkmenistan, international master Saparmurat Atabaev won a silver medal at the 3rd international open tournament “The Road and the Belt”, which was held in Qinhuangdao, China. Saparmurat won 4 games, drew the rest and ultimately scored 6.5 points out of 9 possible. In addition to the silver medal, Saparmurat also achieved his third and final grandmaster norm and raised his Elo rating to 2497 points. If Saparmurat can score +3 points and bring his Elo rating to 2500, he will officially receive the title of “grandmaster” and become the tenth grandmaster in the history of our country.

27 athletes from China, Mongolia, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan took part in the tournament. Of these, 8 are grandmasters, 6 are international masters and 2 are FIDE masters.

Now Saparmurat is preparing for the World Rapid and Blitz Championship, which will be held from December 26 to 30 in Samarkand.
