At the end of each year, American entrepreneur and public figure Bill Gates publishes a list of the books that he loved the most.

This year he limited himself to three books instead of the traditional five.

Thus, the philanthropist recommends reading the book “Song of the Cell” by Pulitzer Prize winner, American oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee. “If I could have read Song of the Cell in school, I might have fallen in love with biology much earlier,” Gates admits, who emphasizes that the author’s passion for the subject—cell biology—is evident on every page.

He also recommended reading a study by data scientist Hannah Ritchie, which analyzes the state of the environment. According to Bill Gates, this book is a must read for anyone who wants to have an informed conversation about climate change.

The American magazine Time included Bill Gates in the list of the most influential people in the fight against climate change. In addition, he founded the Breakthrough Energy venture fund, specializing in projects in the field of energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The entrepreneur recommends paying attention to the book by the Czech-Canadian scientist Vaclav Smil, “Inventions and Innovations: A Brief History of Hype and Failures.”

Vaclav Smil is one of Bill Gates’ favorite authors, whose books he has repeatedly mentioned in his annual lists.

“Having read all 44 of his books and spoken with him on numerous occasions, I know that he is not as optimistic as I am about the prospects for innovation. But even if we look at the future differently, no one can explain the past better than Smil. If you want to learn how human ingenuity has brought us to where we are today, I highly recommend the book "Invention and Innovation," Gates said.

Bill Gates also recommended listening to online lectures by economics professor Timothy Taylor.
