Kazakhstan was elected to UNESCO World Heritage Committee
Kazakhstan was elected to the UNESCO Intergovernmental World Heritage Committee for 2023-2027. This was reported by the International News Agency "Kazinform" with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the republic.
This decision was made during the 24th session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, which was held in Paris on November 22.
118 states voted for Kazakhstan's candidacy. Along with this Central Asian republic, the committee also included Vietnam, Kenya, Lebanon, the Republic of Korea, Senegal, Turkey, Ukraine and Jamaica.
Previously, Kazakhstan was a member of the Intergovernmental UNESCO World Heritage Committee in 2013-2017.
The Intergovernmental World Heritage Committee is one of the main governing bodies of UNESCO. Committee members make decisions on the inclusion of cultural and natural sites to the World Heritage List.
The UNESCO World Heritage List includes six national and transboundary sites located on the territory of Kazakhstan: the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, the petroglyphs of Tamgaly, Sary-Arka - the steppes and lakes of northern Kazakhstan, the network of routes of the Chang'an-Tien Shan Silk Road Corridor, the Western Tien Shan and Turanian deserts of the temperate zone.
