International Day of Islamic Art was proclaimed at the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference in 2019 and is observed annually on 18 November.

Its goal is to raise awareness of the past and contemporary artistic expression of Islam, as well as the contribution of culture through Islamic art to the development of civilization. The worldwide celebration of International Day of Islamic Art not only encourages the recognition of Islamic art that inspires other artistic movements, but also promotes cultural diversity, freedom of expression, protection of cultural heritage and intercultural dialogue.

Celebrating the Day is also a way to strengthen tolerance among peoples and support cultural rapprochement, both of which are possible through the power of art. Many UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East include in their description of Outstanding Universal Value links to Islamic art and its varied artistry, design and architecture.

In the Muslim world, painting, architecture and other forms of art reflect people's perceptions of spirituality, values and their surroundings. The main feature of this culture is the desire for beauty, which is a sign of divinity. Geometric shapes and ornaments seem to reveal the codes of the language of the Universe, and repeating patterns indicate its infinity. Applied art tries to make everyday things beautiful.
