Elections to the Parliament of Turkmenistan are scheduled for March 25
Turkmen voters will elect a new composition of the Mejlis (parliament) of Turkmenistan on March 25, 2018. The parliamentarians themselves appointed such a date by adopting an appropriate resolution.
The Constitution of Turkmenistan defines the parliament as the body that exercises legislative power. It consists of 125 members elected for a five-year term.
The Parliament is authorized to adopt the Basic Law and other laws of the country, the state budget, to consider the main directions of the domestic and foreign policy of the country, to decide on holding national referenda, to appoint presidential elections, parliament deputies, etc.
At the suggestion of the Head of State, the deputies also consider the appointment and dismissal of the chairman of the Supreme Court, the Prosecutor General, the heads of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Justice.
