Turkmenistan to announce new initiatives at the UN – priority positions of the country are formulated


Turkmenistan is preparing a number of international initiatives that will be presented at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, which opens on September 12, 2023 in New York.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov reported to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov on the preparation of Turkmenistan's Priority Positions at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, based on the country's new constructive proposals in relevant areas, during a government meeting on Friday.
Thus, the key track of international cooperation is the strengthening of universal peace and security in modern conditions. Turkmenistan is already the author of significant initiatives in this area, enshrined in the resolutions of the UN General Assembly, and this year intends to put forward an initiative to develop a Global Security Strategy. At the same time, it will be proposed to establish a permanent structure on security issues in Central Asia and hold its first meeting in 2024 in Ashgabat.
A proposal is also being prepared to create a Counter-terrorism Program for Central Asia jointly with the UN Counter-Terrorism Office.

In New York, Turkmenistan will present an initiative to hold a major international forum on food security in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Food Program, the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund.
Other proposals relate to the holding of the international conference of the Friends of Neutrality Group (to which 25 countries have joined to date) in Turkmenistan in December 2024 and the possibility of establishing an Institute of Neutrality and Security in Ashgabat.
In the context of the Sustainable Development Goals, Turkmenistan will put forward proposals on resolutions in the field of ensuring universal energy security and strengthening the interconnectedness of all modes of transport.
On the occasion of the announcement of November 26 as the World Day of Sustainable Transport, Turkmenistan will propose to hold high-level Conferences within the framework of the Ashgabat process during the session of the UN General Assembly.
Turkmenistan also intends to promote the implementation of its initiative to establish a UN Regional Center for Technologies Related to Climate Change in Central Asia.

As a contribution to efforts to fulfill the Global Methane Commitment, Turkmenistan will propose to develop a universal strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 under the auspices of the UN.
The country is also going to announce proposals for the creation of the Caspian Environmental Initiative and the UN Council on the Use of Water Resources in Central Asian Countries with headquarters in Ashgabat.
In connection with the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration, Turkmenistan plans to hold relevant events jointly with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Another proposal concerns the holding of a regional conference on the elimination of statelessness in 2024.
Among other initiatives that will be announced at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly are the holding of the founding meeting of the Central Asian Youth Dialogue in Turkmenistan, the organization of the International Week of Turkic Languages dedicated to the 300th anniversary of Magtymguly Pyragy in 2024, together with UNESCO and TURKSOY. It will also be proposed to adopt the resolution on the "World Day of Turkic Languages".
Within the framework of the partnership with the UN, work will continue on opening representative offices of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, UNESCO, the International Labour Organization, the UN Human Settlements Programme and the UN Office for Project Services in Turkmenistan.
After approval by the head of state, Turkmenistan's priority positions at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly will be sent to the UN Secretariat, distributed through diplomatic and media channels.
