President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov announced the country's readiness to participate in economic projects of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Speaking online at a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO Member States as a guest of the chairman, the head of Turkmenistan noted that official Ashgabat considers relations with the organization as an important part of the strategy of international cooperation, mir24.tv reports.

Turkmenistan shows great interest in the economic, investment, transport and energy initiatives of the SCO, Serdar Berdimuhamedov said. “We see good opportunities for our participation in them on a mutually beneficial and long-term basis,” the President of Turkmenistan noted.

The SCO summit was held on July 4 in Indian New Delhi in a hybrid format. The meeting was attended by the heads of Turkmenistan, Belarus, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Following the meeting, Iran became an official member of the SCO, becoming the ninth state in the organization. Belarus also claims to join the organization.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was established in June 2001 in order to strengthen peace, security and stability in the region, as well as to develop economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation among member states. In 2022, the SCO countries accounted for a quarter of global GDP — more than $23 trillion.
