NASA to equip spaceships with AI so they can talk to astronauts
Employees of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) intend to equip spacecraft with artificial intelligence and eventually allow astronauts to talk to technology in a living human language, like with ChatGPT.
The goal of the project is to make spacecraft more autonomous and allow astronauts to solve complex problems in space without constant communication with the Earth, The Guardian writes.
“It really looks like science fiction,” lead participant Larissa Suzuki of the NASA AI Lab says. “The idea is to get to the point where we can communicate with spacecraft and they [also] will tell us about alarms, interesting finds that they see in the solar system and beyond.”
AI will allow astronauts and flight controllers to navigate the spacecraft using natural language, rather than rummaging through cumbersome technical manuals to find the information they need. The project suggests that astronauts will be able to turn to AI for advice on space experiments or how to perform complex maneuvers.
The first version of the new "space" artificial intelligence is planned to be placed on the planned Lunar Gateway space station, which is part of the Artemis lunar exploration program. It is expected that the station will be put into operation before the end of this decade.
