Irina Luryeva, head of the laboratory of the Natural Gas Research Institute, said that the project to extinguish the gas crater, which has been burning for 50 years, is at the approval stage, TASS reports.

According to Luryeva, uncontrolled emissions of blue fuel can be limited by building a well nearby that would take away most of the gas. The deposit itself has a complex geological structure: very thin layers of rock lie only less than 1 km from the surface.

The gas crater in Garagum was formed in 1971 as a result of the collapse of an exploration mine. After the release of significant volumes of natural gas from the pit and a special arson, the place entitled "The Radiance of the Garagum" is still burning.

In 2022, the leadership of Turkmenistan decided on the need to stop the leakage and ignition of gas due to the formation of a greenhouse effect and the damage caused to the environment as a result of fuel combustion. In addition, natural gas, which is still coming out, can be used more efficiently.
