Within the framework of a joint project of Turkmenistan and the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), it is planned to conduct scientific research on reducing methane emissions, as well as work on improving national environmental legislation.

This was told by the Climate Advisor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Magtymguly Akmuradov at the international scientific conference "Energy prospects, new technologies and environmental aspects of the development of hydrocarbon deposits", which opened today in Ashgabat.

In addition, within the framework of the project, it is planned to conduct a series of trainings for Turkmen specialists.

"We hope that by the beginning of the 28th Annual Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which will be held in Dubai this year, Turkmenistan will come with good and concrete results on this issue," Akmuradov said.

Speaking about the work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Turkmenistan, the Adviser on Climate Issues of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country also noted that now there are scientifically based data in the public domain that Turkmenistan strictly complies with its international environmental obligations.

"Data from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research, in which information from various sources was combined to create a comprehensive and consistent set of data on greenhouse gas emissions from 1850 to 2017, indicate that Turkmenistan is not among the 40 countries with the largest methane emissions," Akmuradov said.

According to the information on the website of the Convention on Climate Change, in 2010, methane emissions in Turkmenistan amounted to about 27 million tons in CO2 equivalent. At the same time, the country, which is on the 40th place in terms of methane emissions in the world, emits 48 million tons of methane in CO2 equivalent per year, the speaker said.
