The leadership of Turkmenistan expresses condolences to Tokayev in connection with forest fires


President Serdar Berdimuhamedov sent his deep condolences to President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, in connection with the large- scale forest fires that broke out in the Abai region in the east of the country and caused loss of life.
On behalf of the people and the Government of Turkmenistan, as well as on his own behalf, the head of state conveyed words of deep empathy and support to the families and friends of the victims and wishes for the speedy restoration of the affected territories.
A telegram of condolences was also sent by the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslakhaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. “At this difficult moment, we share with you the bitterness of irreparable losses,” the message says with an expression of sympathy and support, wishing the soonest elimination of the consequences of the natural disaster.
The fire in the natural reserve in the Abai region has been raging since June 8, its area has reached 60 thousand hectares. As a result of the disaster, 14 people died. According to preliminary data, all the dead are forestry workers.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared June 12 a day of national mourning for the dead.
Hot weather, gusty winds and difficult terrain contributed to the rapid spread of fire. According to the preliminary version, a lightning discharge could have caused the fire.
