The UN has established the World Day of Sustainable Transport on the initiative of Turkmenistan
The day of the first Global Conference on Sustainable Transport in Ashgabat on November 26, 2016 was proclaimed World Sustainable Transport Day. The resolution on the proclamation of this day was adopted by the UN General Assembly on the initiative of Turkmenistan on May 16, 2023 during the 70th plenary session of the 77th session of the General Assembly.
Introducing the resolution "World Sustainable Transport Day", Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN, Ambassador Aksoltan Atayeva stressed that the operative part of the resolution provides for the holding by the President of the UN General Assembly in cooperation with the Department of Economic and Social Affairs at the UN headquarters in New York during the 78th session of the GA of a High-level Meeting on cooperation in the field of sustainable transport.
Atayeva noted that sustainable transport is important for a sustainable future and plays a fundamental role in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
It was also emphasized that the World Sustainable Transport Day will provide an opportunity to raise awareness of the benefits of sustainable transport and mobility, promote low-emission modes of transport, use alternative fuels and energy- efficient vehicles, strengthen connectivity at the regional and global levels, and also play an important role in the systematic consideration of best practices and unresolved issues by the international community. problems on the way to achieving the stability and reliability of the global transport system.
The upcoming High-level Meeting of the UN General Assembly will contribute to the implementation of the transport goals set out in the Agenda for the period up to 2030, the Paris Agreement, the New Urban Development Program and the Political Declaration of the High-level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety, the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN said.
The resolution on the proclamation of the World Day of Sustainable Transport was adopted by consensus with the co-authorship of 67 States.
