Turkmen experts took part in the international symposium "The Non-Aligned Movement in a changing and complex global context", held in Baku on May 16. The forum was organized jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, the Center for Analysis of International Relations and LINKS Europe and brought together representatives of dozens of NAM countries.

Director of the Center for Strategic Studies of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Shiri Shiriyev, speaking at the symposium, emphasized the role of the Non-Aligned Movement countries in obtaining the status of neutrality by Turkmenistan.

Before the neutral status was delegated to our state by the international community in the person of the UN General Assembly in 1995, Turkmenistan's desire for neutrality received unanimous support from the countries of the Movement at the summit in the Colombian city of Cartagena.

National Leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, speaking on the eve of the quarter-century anniversary of Turkmen neutrality, said that we will never forget and always gratefully emphasize the role of non-aligned countries in Turkmenistan's acquisition of neutral status and that the principles of neutrality are in tune with the goals of the Non-Aligned Movement.

"The basis of the foreign policy of the non-aligned countries is the refusal to participate in military-political blocs and peaceful coexistence of peoples based on the principles of independence and equality," Shiriev said.

He also noted that about 55% of the world's population lives in the NAM countries, more than 75% of the world's oil reserves and more than 50% of the world's gas reserves are concentrated in them.

"Neutral Turkmenistan, like the Non-Aligned Movement, stands for the resolution of conflict situations exclusively by political-diplomatic, negotiation methods and means," Shiriev said, adding that in recent years Turkmenistan has brought a lot of productive ideas and practical recommendations in the field of security and cooperation to international negotiating platforms.

He recalled the ministerial conference of the Non-Aligned Movement "Promoting international peace and security for sustainable development" held in Baku in 2018, which was attended by representatives of 120 states, including Turkmenistan.

At the end of the NAM ministerial conference, a Final Declaration was adopted, which reflects Turkmenistan's initiatives regarding the implementation of large-scale projects in the transport and energy sectors of the Afghan economy.

An important event in strengthening the multilateral dialogue on topical issues of the international agenda was the participation of the President of Turkmenistan in the XVIII Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, held in October 2019 in Baku.

There are many more examples that Turkmenistan's close cooperation with the Non-Aligned Movement is concrete and active, which is primarily due to the commonality of the principles of non-alignment and the policy of neutrality.

And such interaction, in our opinion, will have a tendency to progressive development in the name of maintaining stability in the world and the region.
