Amendments to the Agreement on the International Railway Transit Tariff are being discussed in Ashgabat

On May 15, the XXXIV Meeting of Representatives of the parties to the Agreement on the International Railway Transit Tariff (IRTT) opened in the Turkmen capital.
The current meeting is devoted to the improvement and updating of the IRTT document, which is an agreement between two dozen countries, establishing uniform rules and tariffs for the transportation of goods by rail in transit mode.

The agreement, which entered into force in 1997, promotes the development of transport infrastructure, an increase in cargo flows, an increase in the competitiveness of rail transport and closer cooperation between the countries participating in the agreement.
"This event is important because it takes place in Turkmenistan, one of the key member states of the Organization for Cooperation of Railways," Zubaida Aspayeva, Chairman of the OCR Freight Transportation Commission, commented to ORIENT.

"All the participants gathered here to discuss issues related to tariffs for transit cargo transportation and the establishment of uniform tariff rules in the vast Asian space. This is of key importance for all OCR member countries. And Turkmenistan is one of our most important strategic partners in transportation from Europe to Asia."

Aspayeva also noted that the solution of the issues outlined in the agenda will contribute to an increase in the volume of traffic along the international transport corridors "North — South", "East — West" and others, as well as the expansion of the range of transported goods.
On the first day of the meeting, which will be held until May 18, the parties agreed on the agenda and the composition of the drafting group, which will prepare a draft Protocol of the event.
