After an almost 12-year absence, the giant Olympic rings returned to the Panathinaikos Stadium in Athens, where the first Olympic Games of modern times were held. They were re-installed at the far end from the main entrance of the sports complex.

"This is a great moment for the Greek Olympic Committee. The symbol of the Games returned many years later. Now all Greeks and foreigners who visit the Panathinaikos Stadium will remember the historical sporting events that took place there," said Sporis Kapralos, President of the National Olympic Committee of Greece.

The project was implemented with the support of the sponsor of the Greek Olympic Committee — the company Mytilineos.SA .

In 2011, the rings at the stadium were dismantled for security reasons. Since then, only the flags at the entrance reminded that the Olympic movement was born here in 1896.
