The Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN held the third meeting of the Group of Friends on Sustainable Transport in a virtual format on May 10.

The meeting was attended by Permanent Representatives to the UN of the Group's member countries, Executive Secretary of the International Center for Transport Diplomacy (ICTD) Igor Runov, Secretary General of the SLOCAT Partnership for Sustainable Low-Carbon Transport Marusha Kardama, President of the International Educational and Research Network on Global Supply Chains (GSCC) Chung Tam.

Opening the meeting, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN, Aksoltan Atayeva, informed about the results of the work within the Group for the first half of 2023, and also outlined the upcoming steps and a number of proposals for the development of multilateral cooperation at the UN platform on sustainable transport, the official page of the Turkmen representation says.

In particular, it was emphasized that the UN General Assembly during the plenary session next week, on May 16, will consider the draft resolution "World Transport Day", submitted by Turkmenistan. This will be followed by preparations for the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on sustainable transport in November 2023.

Igor Runov presented the draft concept of the Advisory Council to the Group of Friends on Sustainable Transport, whose main role will be to prepare, at the request of the Group members, supporting analytical materials on transport development and international cooperation in this area. In addition, plans were announced to expand the current practice of preparing regular newsletters for Group members.

It was also about expanding the membership of the Group and the scope of its activities. In this regard, the importance of joining the Group of new members - Morocco and Nicaragua - was noted.

During the meeting, the delegations supported the proposal to establish an Advisory Council and expressed strong support for Turkmenistan during the upcoming consideration of the draft resolution of the UN General Assembly "World Transport Day" and in preparation for the high-level meeting of the General Assembly in November this year.

During the meeting, the delegations also noted the need to further expand the Group's activities in order to regularly exchange views on ways to overcome challenges in the transport and logistics sector, ways to minimize regional and global barriers in this sector, and new initiatives of the UN member States in the field of transport development.

The next meeting of the Group is scheduled for December 2023.
