Early presidential elections will be held in Uzbekistan

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a decree on holding early presidential elections.
Earlier on Monday, Mirziyoyev signed a constitutional law allowing the head of state to announce early presidential elections. This will be the first presidential election after amendments to the constitution providing for the extension of the term of office of the head of state from five to seven years.
According to the constitutional law, the current President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who is holding office for a second term, can run for this post again.
It should be noted that early presidential elections in Uzbekistan will be held on July 9, 2023. The President of Uzbekistan also signed a corresponding decree.
"When the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan appoints early elections of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the elections are held within two months in full compliance with this Code," the text of the law says.
Previously, it was allowed to hold early presidential elections in Uzbekistan only if the current head of the country is unable to perform his duties for three months.
The President expressed confidence that the elections will be held in full compliance with the law, openly and transparently, that the parties and presidential candidates will put forward new ideas and initiatives that serve the peace and prosperity of the country and the well-being of the people.
