Two Uzbek cities have been declared the thematic capitals of the Commonwealth in 2024 - Samarkand will become the cultural capital of the CIS, and Tashkent — the youth capital. This proposal was made on Friday at the CIS Council of Ministers in Uzbekistan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a press conference, Sputnik Uzbekistan reports.

The meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States was held on April 14 in Samarkand. Representatives of the Foreign Ministries of the Commonwealth countries, as well as the Secretary General of the CIS Executive Committee took part in its work. The Forum is being held under the chairmanship of Kyrgyzstan.

At the summit, the delegates considered about ten issues in various spheres of cooperation in the Commonwealth space. One of the topics was the assignment of thematic status to the cities of Uzbekistan.

"The transfer of the status of the cultural capital of the CIS to the city of Samarkand in 2024, and the status of the youth capital of the CIS to Tashkent in the same year is a vivid evidence of Uzbekistan's active participation in our cooperation within the CIS," said Secretary General of the Commonwealth Sergey Lebedev at the meeting.

The Commonwealth of Independent States was established in December 1991 after the collapse of the USSR. The founders of the Commonwealth were Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Later Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan joined. The CIS chair country in 2023 is Kyrgyzstan.
