Leaders of Turkmenistan and Tajikistan discussed Afghan issue
The situation in Afghanistan took one of the priorty places on the agenda of summit talks held today in Dushanbe between the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon. “We stand for providing active international support to the Afghan government, facilitating the effective integration of this country into regional and global economic processes, in particular in vital areas such as energy and transport,” the state news agency TDH cited the Turkmen leader as saying. The position of Turkmenistan on the settlement of the Afghan conflict is principled and unflinching - the only solution is the internal dialogue with the involvement of all Afghan factions, while military methods are unpromising and ineffective. The head of the Turkmen state called for the activation of the peacekeeping potential of the UN and other international institutions in Afghanistan. Afghanistan theme has also reflected in the joint statement signed by the presidents following the talks. In particular, the document emphasizes the importance of implementing major regional project of Tajikistan-Afghanistan-Turkmenistan railway, as well as the significance of other regional and international projects contributing to the sustainable development of the neighboring country. The leaders of the two friendly nations are unanimous in the opinion that “the early political stabilization and socio-economic revival of Afghanistan are crucial for ensuring security and stability in the region.” The Turkmen side expressed hoped for the effectiveness of the upcoming VII Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan (RECCA), to be hosted by Ashgabat on 14-15 November, and expects the participation of solid Tajik delegation in this forum.
