The diplomatic agencies of Turkmenistan and the United States discussed cooperation in the field of security
Turkmenistan's Deputy Foreign Minister Vepa Hajiyev and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification and Compliance Mallory Stewart held a telephone conversation on Tuesday.
The diplomats discussed security cooperation within the framework of various international and regional organizations and paid special attention to the process of implementation of the Vienna Document of 2011 on confidence- and security-building measures, the press release of the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said.
"The importance of intensifying the dialogue on the implementation of this agreement through bilateral meetings, strengthening the capacity of specialists through the organization of specialized seminars and trainings was noted," the message reads.
"The parties stressed the need to effectively counter modern challenges and threats, and also considered means to strengthen confidence-building measures on arms control and the implementation of international obligations in this area," the ministry added.
The 18th Annual Conference of the North Atlantic Alliance on Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction is being held in Washington from April 17 to 20. Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will deliver a welcoming speech to the participants on April 18.
