Half of the world's new railway projects are in Asia
The International Conference on Railway Safety - IRSC 2017 - took place in Hong Kong from October 23 to 26.
The main objective of the forum, according to the organizers, is to stimulate cooperation between regions, to develop and introduce innovative technologies to improve safety in rail transport, and to enhance the role of the railway infrastructure in global development.
Among the topics discussed by the conference delegates are: high-speed railway as one of the most successful and promising modes of transport; advanced technologies for effective management of the industry and ensuring its "punctuality"; normative decisions based on legislation and policies, social values; safety culture with continuous improvement of standards and requirements.
Issues of reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency in railway systems were also discussed.
The other day the International Union of Railways, which includes more than 200 railway companies from almost 100 countries around the world, has published a document presenting an analysis of global investments in railway infrastructure in order to increase the industry's contribution to combating climate change.
It also follows from this report that 1,500 infrastructure projects in the field of railways worth at least 2.1 trillion are planned on a global scale. (not including about $ 80 billion for the purchase of rolling stock). This makes a total of 140 thousand km of new railway lines. And, about half of these projects are in Asia, with China dominating in this area..
