Former Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides has been elected the new president of Cyprus

The new president of Cyprus was elected by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the country, conservative Nikos Christodoulides, who received 51.9% of the votes. The turnout in the elections was 72.2%, Bloomberg reports.

Christodoulides will hold the position for 5 years and will become the 8th president of Cyprus. He won in two stages of the elections, overtaking the candidate nominated by the Democratic Gathering party, the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, Andreas Mavroyannis.

The former Foreign Minister ran for president as an independent candidate. On the eve of the elections, he called on citizens to unite in solving the island's problems.
