Turkey has opened the border with Armenia for the arrival of aid 35 years after the Spitak drama
Turkish authorities have opened a border crossing with Armenia 35 years after its closure to allow the import of humanitarian aid to earthquake victims in 10 Turkish provinces in the south of the country.
According to the state news agency Anadolu, five trucks with humanitarian aid from Armenia passed through the Alijan checkpoint in the Turkish province of Aider.
The last time the crossing was used was in 1988, when the Turkish Red Crescent delivered aid after the earthquake to Armenia. It was the Spitak earthquake, also known as the Leninakan earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.8-7.2, which occurred on December 7, 1988.
At dawn on February 6, 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 occurred in southern Turkey and northern Syria, followed a few hours later with a magnitude of 7.6 and hundreds of strong aftershocks, which led to huge loss of life and material damage in both countries.
