Nicklaus: I hope to see the Turkmen team at the Olympic Games in Tokyo
Jack Nicklaus, the legendary golfer, nicknamed the Golden Bear, and now the General Director of the Nicklaus Companies, with the participation of which the Ashgabat Golf Club project was implemented, said today at the opening ceremony:
“It was a great honor for me to assume responsibility for the creation of the first golf course in Turkmenistan, I believe that this kind of sport, which you can play all your life, will gain popularity in the country and expand its horizons.”
For such stars of world golf as Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and their like-minded people, it took a lot of effort to ensure that their favorite sport, which had been excluded since 1904, returned to the Olympic Games program again. And it happened at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Since that moment, a new chapter has begun in the history of golf.
Speaking today at an Opening Ceremony in Ashgabat, Jack Nicklaus expressed the hope that he would see the Turkmen golf team at the summer Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020. Nicklaus added that he had presented a “five-year plan”, which was aimed at the holding international golf tournaments in Turkmenistan, for the consideration of the Turkmen Leader. He said that the implementation of this plan begins with the opening of the Ashgabat Golf Club.
“Turkmenistan has good opportunity to become a world leader in golf,” said Jack Nicklaus, who came to Ashgabat with his son - Jack Nicklaus Jr., who is the President of Nicklaus Design, and three famous golfers - Andy North, Nick Price and Larry Nelson.
Titled players today participated in the exhibition match in the Ashgabat Golf Club, playing the first Cup in its history.
