Underwater garage for 7,000 bicycles built in Amsterdam
An engineering marvel has appeared in Amsterdam near the central station - a unique underwater garage for 7,000 bicycles. On January 26, the official opening of the structure, located directly under the city's canals and pleasure boats, will take place, writes The Guardian.
The cost of the project is 60 million dollars. The construction of an underwater bicycle parking began in 2019. The parking lot has red and green indicators showing whether there are empty spaces, and from April, the dynamic system will begin to show in which bike rack you can park two-wheelers.
Thus, the authorities of Amsterdam are trying to solve the actual problem of bicycle parking that exists in the Netherlands. Today, 835,000 Amsterdam residents make an average of 665,000 bike rides per day, or 36% of the city's total travel. For cars, this figure is only 24%, the publication writes.
Thanks to these garages, thousands of bicycles, which are often abandoned by passengers, will be removed from the embankments in the city. You can park your bike indoors for free for a day, and then you will have to pay 1.35 euros per day. In addition, a simplified parking system will return to pedestrians and tourists the public space of the city, where rusty bicycles left by hurrying owners are scattered.
