Russian IT giants plan to create a new mobile operating system

Yandex, VK, Rostelecom and Sberbank plan to create a company that will develop a new mobile operating system (OS) based on Android platform, potentially able to replace Google Mobile Services, Kommersant reports.
The Russian Ministry of Digital Development will involve a consortium of developers in the project to develop the national mobile ecosystem. Sberbank, in turn, together with Rostelecom plan to establish a company that will create a mobile OS based on the publicly available Android code and a platform of mobile services compatible with it.
"There is no formal consortium yet, but major players are ready to join forces to develop the platform. It is necessary for everyone who wants their applications to have adequate functionality," an unnamed source told Kommersant, noting that the plan will not contradict the Aurora OS launched by Rostelecom.
The Aurora OS will be used in the corporate and public sectors to work with sensitive data, while the new OS will be aimed at the consumer segment.
