A seminar on methods and tools for collecting, analyzing and using data designed to help people with disabilities, organized by the UN Office in Turkmenistan, has ended in Ashgabat.

The course, held in a hybrid format, should strengthen the capacity of representatives of national statistical offices, public organizations and other persons involved in the collection, analysis and dissemination of data to promote the rights of children with disabilities.

During the interactive classes, the participants got acquainted with the methods and tools for collecting data on people with disabilities, the principles of their analysis and interpretation. Experts on statistics and monitoring of the UNICEF headquarters in New York, the Washington Group on Disability Statistics also presented the results of the UNICEF global report on children with disabilities.

Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) requires ratifying States parties to "collect appropriate information, including statistical and research data, so that they can formulate and implement policies for the implementation of this Convention."

A similar requirement is also laid down in the Sustainable Development Goals. Goal 17 includes a clear objective to support countries in improving the availability of high-quality, timely and disaggregated data.
