Uzbekistan, despite the shortage of electricity in winter, continues to export it to Afghanistan to cover import costs, Deputy Prime Minister, Energy Minister Zhurabek Mirzamakhmudov said.

“Taking into account the fact that we import about 20 million kWh of electricity (per day - ed.) from abroad, to cover part of the foreign exchange costs, we export about 5-6 million kWh, deliver to Afghanistan,” Mirzamakhmudov said. in an interview with the local internet publication gazeta.uz.

The head of the Ministry of Energy specified that Uzbekistan imports electricity from Turkmenistan, taking into account the increased demand. “All this is directed to cover domestic needs,” Mirzamakhmudov added.

In 2019, the Uzbek “National Electric Grids” JSC signed a contract with the Afghan Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) to supply up to 6 billion kWh of electricity annually for a period of ten years on a “take or pay” basis.

In August, the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan reported that it had received a payment from DABS for the supply of electricity in 2021, payments for the supply in 2022 are being made. According to the agency, this year the volume of electricity supplies from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan is set at 2.21 billion kWh.

In this regard, we note that Turkmenistan has been providing the northern regions of Afghanistan with electricity at preferential prices for a number of years.
