For the first time in almost 40 years, the world's largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, began to erupt, causing ashfall on the Big Island of Hawaii and adjacent waters, CNN reports.

"Due to ashfall, damage to crops and animals is possible, as well as minor damage to equipment and infrastructure, visibility may decrease. If the consequences are serious, it may be necessary to clear the area of ash," representatives of the Hawaii State Tourism Authority said.

According to the Geological Survey, since 1843, when the first eruption was documented, Mauna Loa has erupted 33 more times. The last eruption occurred in 1984, when the lava flow almost reached the largest city on the island - Hilo.

Because of such an activity, Mauna Loa is considered the largest active volcano in the world.
