The XX Congress of the Communist Party of China determines the further course of development of the country


On Sunday, the XX Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) opened in Beijing, where the further course of the country's development is determined and the top party leadership will be elected, Chinadaily reports.
The congress, which will be attended by 2,296 delegates from all over China, will be held until October 22. The event will consider the report of the CPC Central Committee of the 19th convocation, amendments to the party charter and elect the Central Committee and the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the 20th convocation.
The CPC Central Committee is the highest governing body of the party in the intervals between the national congresses of the CPC. The Political Bureau of the Central Committee convenes several plenary meetings during its five-year term of office to take decisions and policy measures.
The National Congress of the CPC is the highest body of the ruling party of China. It is convened by the Central Committee once every five years.
The plenum or plenary session of the CPC Central Committee is convened by the Political Bureau of the Central Committee at least once a year and no more than seven times during the five-year term of office.
About 2,000 delegates are taking part in the National Congress of the CPC. They elect a new Central Committee and discuss the main issues within the party. The plenary session of the Central Committee is attended by hundreds of full members and candidates for membership.
As a rule, the Political Bureau and its Standing Committee, as well as the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, are elected at the first plenary session.
