German scientists from the Paul Ehrlich Institute and the University of Giessen have proposed a new way to treat allergies. The therapy is based on the use of the rFlaA:Betv1 fusion protein, according to the scientific journal Allergy.

It is known that up to a quarter of the world's population suffers from many types of allergies. Previously, medicine offered only the treatment of symptoms. But in recent years, scientists have been developing new approaches designed to eliminate not the consequences, but the cause of allergies. Researchers from Germany synthesized the protein from the birch pollen allergen Bet v 1 and the flagella protein rFlaA from the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Laboratory experiments have shown that this leads to an increase in the production of the substance IL-10, which suppresses the excessive allergic reaction of cells.

After analyzing the effect of the allergen-containing rFlaA:Betv1 protein on B-cells, specific cells of the immune system, the researchers found that upon contact with it, B-cells differentiate into regulatory ones. The importance of this discovery lies in the fact that regulatory cells produce antibodies and interleukins that do not lead to an allergic reaction.

Thus, the authors of the scientific work came to the conclusion that the hybrid protein can really alleviate the condition of an allergy to birch pollen.
