The country presented such ambitious goals in the program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in key sectors of the national economy, which will be implemented under the Paris Climate Agreement. The document was submitted to the UNFCCC Secretariat in May this year.

Particular attention in this context is paid to reducing emissions of methane, which is a greenhouse gas that retains heat in the atmosphere, and its share in global emissions today is about 20%.

Having studied its negative impact on the environment and climate, scientists have included it in the number of anthropogenic greenhouse gases, the emissions of which are controlled by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The country expects to achieve these indicators both at the expense of its own financial resources and with investment and technical support from international organizations, funds and institutions.

This was announced by Turkmen experts at the Ashgabat international forum, which opened on Thursday, June 23, dedicated to the environmental aspects of hydrocarbon production.

The speakers noted that today the scientific world is paying close attention to solving the problem of methane accumulation in the atmosphere and, most importantly, to developing methods to reduce its emissions. The risk of global warming from methane is 30 times greater than from carbon dioxide (CO2) and it heats the atmosphere ten times more than CO2. In addition, it contributes to the formation of ground-level ozone, a dangerous air pollutant.

Turkmenistan is taking practical steps to fulfill its obligations under international treaties and conventions. Turkmen scientists have developed key measures to improve energy efficiency and energy saving in the oil and gas sector - the country is taking measures to reduce leakage during the production, transportation, storage and processing of natural gas. To detect and reduce the risk of these defects, automatic systems are used in low and medium pressure gas distribution networks.

In addition, gas distribution networks in the gas supply system are being reconstructed, and modern methods of controlling the amount of pollutant emissions are being introduced. Specialists carry out timely repairs and replacement of equipment inside field and main oil and gas pipelines.

Such measures have been identified and are being actively implemented in other sectors of the economy where greenhouse gas emissions are generated.
