The implementation of the Ashgabat agreements is being considered by the diplomats of the ECO member countries in Tehran
A two-day brainstorming session on the ECO reform process began on Monday, May 23, at the ECO Secretariat in Tehran. The event is held at the level of Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the member States. Turkmenistan is represented at the meeting by Vepa Hadjiev. The meeting is also attended by delegates from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
The High-level Meeting, opened by ECO Secretary General Khusrav Noziri, includes a plenary session and two working rounds.
The session is aimed at considering a number of specific issues, especially ways and means of strengthening regional cooperation in the post-pandemic period, as well as ensuring the effective implementation of the agreements reached in Ashgabat.
On the first day, issues of regional trade and interconnectedness, expansion of economic cooperation between member countries were discussed. As noted, last year the volume of trade between the ECO member countries amounted to about $ 40 billion, and there is an opportunity to increase this volume to $ 500-600 billion.
The parties also agree that transit activities between the member States should be expanded, and tariffs should be the same and agreed between the Member States.
The meeting is also devoted to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Organization, specialized ECO agencies, and developing a coordination mechanism for financing and implementing ECO projects.
