Speaking at the second session of the International Investment Forum "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan" (OGT-2022), Victor Nian, Advisor to the Center for Strategic Energy and Resources of Singapore, spoke about the prospects for the emergence of a hydrogen economy.

Hydrogen appears to be an ideal complement to renewable energy on the path to decarbonization, the expert noted. Attention was paid to the special properties of hydrogen as a fuel back in the middle of the last century - its calorific value is several times greater than that of natural gas, gasoline or diesel fuel of the same mass, and no emissions are formed, except for water vapor.

The growing need for energy storage has again brought to mind hydrogen, the production and study of which is extremely important in the light of the world community's concern about climate change.

Hydrogen Council experts have argued that by 2050 hydrogen will account for 18% of the world's energy needs. According to other forecasts, by this time the world consumption of hydrogen will grow to 370 million tons per year (by 2100 - up to 800 million tons).

Japan was the first country to formulate its national hydrogen strategy in 2017. In 2019, the country adopted a "Strategic Roadmap for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells". In 2019, the Republic of Korea outlined strategic plans for the development of hydrogen.

Turkmenistan plans to implement the Roadmap for the development of international cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy for 2022-2023, which will allow forming a new industry in a short time. International analytical and research centers will participate in the implementation of the National Strategy for the Development of Hydrogen Energy.

It should also be noted that the Turkmenbashi complex of oil refineries plans to build a hydrogen production unit and has previously announced a corresponding tender.
