Turkmenistan's energy sector and a set of tasks to improve it in the context of developing international economic relations were the subject of a working meeting chaired by President Berdimuhamedov on Tuesday.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Prime Ministers on Economy, Foreign Policy and Energy.

During the meeting, the Turkmen leader paid special attention to the digitization of the oil and gas industry and the diversification of energy routes, which will allow to bring the country's economic potential to a higher level.

In this regard, instructions were given to Deputy Prime Ministers Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Shahim Abdrakhmanov.

In this context, special attention was paid to the promotion of the TAPI construction project.

One of the key tasks addressed to Deputy Prime Minister Rashid Meredov was the intensification of the negotiation process and the strengthening of dialogue with the countries-consumers and transit states of Turkmen gas.

In the course of these instructions, it is worth mentioning the recently observed activity of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan on the promotion of major international projects in the south and south-east direction.

Turkmenistan's official delegation is currently holding talks with senior leaders in Islamabad this week, as well as holding joint working groups with Pakistan to accelerate the promotion of two multi-billion-dollar energy supply projects.

This is the TAPI gas pipeline and the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) power transmission line.

TAPI is an 1840 km transboundary gas pipeline project to export natural gas from Turkmenistan to three countries. When completed, it will transport up to 33 billion cubic meters of natural gas a year from the Galkynysh field and adjacent gas fields in Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India for the next 30 years.

Similarly, the TAP project will include the construction of a 500-kilovolt power transmission line with a length of about 500 km between Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. It will transfer up to 4,000 megawatts of electricity from Turkmenistan to two other countries.

To make progress on these important projects, the Turkmen delegation, led by Deputy Foreign Minister Vepa Khadzhiev, held a wide-ranging meeting with the Pakistani delegation led by Federal Energy Minister Hamad on Monday, January 31st.

They discussed various important aspects of these major projects and stressed the need to accelerate them. Ajar stressed the need to complete the TAPI project as soon as possible due to Pakistan's growing demand for additional natural gas supplies.

The parties agreed to hold a week-long meeting of the Technical Working Group on the TAP transmission line to discuss the parameters of the pre-feasibility study of the project. The TAPI Technical Working Group meeting was held on Tuesday (today), with a future roadmap for the project being considered.

TAPI and TAP will give a significant economic boost to the economies of the importing countries due to their rapidly growing energy needs. Pakistan has been facing a severe shortage of energy over the past few years, affecting its economy. The deficit hit the country's export sector, especially in the textile sector - the main source of foreign currency.

Pakistan is currently meeting a quarter of its energy demand by importing LNG (liquefied natural gas), the value of which is tied to the price of crude oil. As oil prices rose to a seven-year high, this also led to an increase in import gas prices.
