Today, on April 19th, the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva hosted a ceremony to present WIPO Director General Darren Tang of the Instrument of Accession to the Patent Law Treaty (2000), signed by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The document was presented by the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Office in Geneva, Atageldy Khaljanov. Being a full member of WIPO since 1991, Turkmenistan is a party to 13 out of 26 legal documents of the organization, and after the entry into force of the said Instrument of Accession, the country's participation will increase by one more document. Daren Tang noted that Turkmenistan became the 43rd country to join the Treaty, confirmed its readiness to provide all possible assistance in relation to other WIPO documents that Turkmenistan can consider and to which can join. The Patent Law Treaty was adopted on June 1st, 2000 in order to harmonize and streamline the formal procedures applied to national and regional patent applications and patents, and to make these procedures more user-friendly. The Treaty provides for maximum lists of requirements that can be applied by the Office of a Contracting Party (an important exception is the filing date requirements).
