Import Substitution: Turkmen Business Develops Production of Leather Shoes

We choose shoes, evaluating their convenience and practicality, compliance with modern style trends, as well as adequate cost. Turkmen private producers have recently started to develop this segment of the domestic market, focusing on these criteria and objectives of the state import substitution program.
One of them is the entrepreneur Arslan Movlamov, who founded Yelken shoe brand.
“Our leather shoes company opened about a year ago in the Lebap region. Every day, an average of 45-50 pairs of shoes of men’s, women’s and children’s models are produced here, – says Arslan. – This handmade production takes a lot of time, but it is worth it.”
Shoes at the enterprise are made of Aksuw Deri genuine leather, which is produced by Aksuw Economic Society.
In addition, the company is engaged in the manufacture of leather belts. Here, about 25 belts are produced per day from local raw materials – camel leather. They also repair worn-out shoes and belts.
Customers have an opportunity to hand over the old belt and buy a new one at a discount.
The company is currently working only for the domestic market. Now there are 4 stores in the region, where the products of Yelken are sent to after quality control.
In the future, the entrepreneur plans to open stores in Ashgabat, and also intends to expand the number of workplaces and the range of products produced. In addition to shoes and belts, bags and soft toys will be produced here.
