FAO held a webinar on the impact of the pandemic on fisheries in Central Asia
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations held a webinar, devoted to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on fisheries and aquaculture in Central Asia and the Caucasus.
The webinar allowed the governmental organisations, experts, civil society and the industry to carry out inventory of measures of the reaction undertaken by the sector of fish economy and aquaculture, on the crisis caused by the pandemic, informs the FAO press service.
During the online event the consequences of the pandemic observed in fish economy, aquaculture and in the sphere of food security in the countries of Central Asia and Caucasus were considered. The exchange of the best practices and program measures of reaction to COVID-19, including in the field of actions by industry and government measures undertaken and also the nearest and long-term requirements of sector thereupon were studied.
«Measures on struggle against the virus had serious consequences for international trade; and as fish and fish products are those articles of food which most actively are on sale at the international level influence COVID-19 on industrial aspects and a chain of deliveries of fish remains essential», - noted Haydar Fersoy, senior FAO fisheries and aquaculture officer.
Faults in an industrial-marketing chain also have negatively affected demand for these articles of food. It, in turn, will have a pernicious effect on means of subsistence of fishermen and fish breeders, and also on food security and food of the population which substantially depends on the fish who are a source of animal protein and the basic nutritious microcells.
Nevertheless, consequences of the pandemic for the sector of fish economy and aquaculture in Central Asia and Caucasus have not been adequately confirmed by the corresponding documentation.
In the framework of the webinar with survey presentations about the situation in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan acted.
The virtual action is a part of a series regional webinars of FAO, devoted to COVID-19 .
