XI Universiade of Turkmenistan kicks-off in Ashgabat
XI Universiade of Turkmenistan has opened in Ashgabat. This year, the student competitions organized by the Ministry of Sport and Youth Policy of the country gathered teams from 21 universities. The teams will compete in 21 sports disciplines, including football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, etc.
The goal of the Universiade, which is held annually since 2009, is to promote young sports talents and inspire the most promising of them. According to the organizers, the teams of the Institute of Physical Culture and Sports, the Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering, the Institute of Economics and Management are among the most successful teams of previous years.
“Last year, our athletes were not able to enter the Top-3 in the team event,” Jumadurdy Meredov, representative of the Dostluk team of the International University for Humanities and Development, head of the sports club of the university said. “But this year, with renewed strength, we are here to win. After all, our students are strong enough in football, futsal, tennis, badminton and other sporsts disciplines.”
Jumadurdy Meredov was a professional footballer, captain of the national football team of Turkmenistan (1997-1998), and played for FC Kopetdag.
The results of the Universiade 2019 will be announced in April.
