Japanese developers are testing a "green" ship with solar sails
Green ships, environmental vessels that use the power of wind and sun, will play an important role in the future, as world shipping takes measures to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and CO2, NOx and SOx emissions. At the forefront of the development of renewable energy systems for ships is the Japanese company Eco Marine Power, which is now preparing for the practical testing of its next project - Aquarius MRE ® (Marine Renewable Energy) - a system that will enable vessels to be powered in a more environmentally friendly way. Aquarius MRE is an innovative integrated system of rigid sails, marine-grade solar panels, energy storage modules. The array of rigid sails is automatically positioned by the computer system to best match the prevailing weather conditions and can be dropped and stored when not in use or during bad weather. Rigid sails are based on EMP's EnergySail® technology, and these renewable energy devices can even be used when the ship is anchored or is in the harbor. Sea testing of ships with this system will be carried out for a year and a half to collect reliable information on the effectiveness of this development, decrease in fuel consumption and reduction of carbon emissions to the environment.
