UN Security Council prolongs mandate of Assistance Mission in Afghanistan and welcomes TAPI project

The Security Council extended for another year the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and expressed its support for regional infrastructure projects such as TAPI and railway initiatives of Turkmenistan related to Afghanistan. The Resolution 2405, adopted on 8 March, prolongs UNAMA’s mandate till 17 March 2019. The 12-page document stipulates that UNAMA and the special representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan would focus in particular on supporting the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process, support preparations for parliamentary in 2018 and presidential elections in 2019. Moreover, the resolution welcomes the such regional connectivity projects such as the Belt and Road initiative, the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline, the Central Asia-South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project, the Chabahar port project, Lapis Lazuli corridor and the Kerki-Ymamnazar (Turkmenistan)-Aqina (Afghanistan),. United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan is a political UN mission established on 28 March 2002 by United Nations Security Council Resolution, at the request of the Government of Afghanistan to assist it and the people of Afghanistan in laying the foundations for sustainable peace and development.
